Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and what better way to show the love than handmade crocheted gifts?! Once again, Blackstone DesignsA Crocheted Simplicity, Sincerely Pam, and Crystalized Designs have teamed up to bring you a fun blog hop style Crochet-A-Long. This time, we’re bringing you free patterns perfect for the classroom! Check out the free heart envelope crochet pattern, ideal for those smaller rectangle valentines or little notes. This envelope can hold more than letters or valentines though. Small treats, such as air heads or smaller candy bars, can also be kept within.

Special Pattern Notes:

Beginning chain does not count as a stitch.

Carry opposite color on wrong side of piece.

Work between half double crochets, not in just the top 2 loops. This will eliminate the ridge when working in rows on the right side.

For single color envelope, ignore color changes.

 

Free Heart Envelope Crochet Pattern

Ch 21 with Color A

R1: 2 hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next 18 chs, 2 hdc in last ch, working down opposite side of chain, hdc in next 18 chs, join – 40 sts

R2: Ch 1, hdc in same and next 10, hdc in next in Color B, hdc in remaining sts using Color A, join – 40 sts

R3: Ch 1, hdc in same and next 9, hdc in next 4 in Color B, hdc in remaining sts using Color A, join – 40 sts

R4: Ch 1, hdc in same and next 8, hdc in next 7 in Color B, hdc in remaining sts using Color A, join – 40 sts

You’ll now be working in rows to create the envelope opening in the back. Turn and slst in next 7 sts. Row 5 will need to work over the slsts just made.

R5: Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog starting in same, hdc in next 13, hdc in next 10 in Color B, hdc in next 13 in Color A, hdc2tog – 38 sts

R6: Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog starting in same, hdc in next 11, hdc in next 12 in Color B, hdc in next 11 in Color A, hdc2tog – 36 sts

R7: Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog starting in same, hdc in next 9, hdc in next 14 in Color B, hdc in next 9 in Color A, hdc2tog – 34 sts

R8: Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog starting in same, hdc in next 8, hdc in next 6 in Color B, hdc in next 2 in Color A, hdc in next 6 in Color B, hdc in next 8 in Color A, hdc2tog – 32 sts

R9: Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog starting in same, hdc in next 8, hdc in next 4 in Color B, hdc in next 4 in Color A, hdc in next 4 in Color B, hdc in next 8 in Color A, hdc2tog – 30 sts

R10: Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog starting in same, hdc in next 26, hdc2tog – 28 sts

R11: Ch 1, turn, 2 hdc2tog starting first hdc2tog in same, hdc in next 20, 2 hdc2tog – 24 sts

R12: Ch 1, turn, working in FLO hdc2tog starting in same, hdc in next 20 using FLO, hdc2tog using FLO – 22 sts

R13: Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog starting in same, hdc in next 18 sts, hdc2tog – 20 sts

R14: Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog starting in same, hdc in next 16 sts, hdc2tog – 18 sts

R15: Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog starting in same, hdc in next 14 sts, hdc2tog – 16 sts

R16: Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog starting in same, hdc in next 12 sts, hdc2tog – 14 sts

R17: Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog starting in same, hdc in next 10 sts, hdc2tog – 12 sts

R18: Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog starting in same, hdc in next 8 sts, hdc2tog – 10 sts

R19: Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog starting in same, hdc in next 6 sts, hdc2tog – 8 sts

R20: Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog starting in same, hdc in next 4 sts, hdc2tog – 6 sts

R21: Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog starting in same, hdc in next 2 sts, hdc2tog – 4 sts

R22: Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog starting in same, ch 2 (button hole), hdc2tog over last 2 sts – 2 sts

R23: Ch 1, turn, hdc2tog starting in same but skipping over the ch 2 – 1 st

Do not finish off. Turn piece so you’re working down left of envelope flap with right side facing. Sc evenly around entire raw edge of rows. Join to first sc. Finish off and weave in all ends.

Sew button on Round 3 in the center of the back of the envelope.
