Succulent Tissue Cover ~ A Free Crochet Pattern

I love puns! And when I recently created a “Sucks to be Sick” succulent get well-card, it inspired a little gift to go along with it. With this succulent tissue cover crochet pattern, now you can make your very own, too!

Materials:

Being Sick Sucks! But your tissue box doesn’t have to! If you’re a plant lover, this tissue box is for you. Pairs great with a “Get Well” card as well as a great way to add crochet to any room. Two size options: rectangle or cube tissue boxes

Special Pattern Notes:

Beginning chain does not count as a stitch unless noted. Chains are not listed in stitch counts.

Carry main color (or if repeating any colors) up the inside while working.

If size of tissue box is different than the listed measurements on page 2, adjust hook. Different size boxes may result in too loose or too tight of a cover.

 

Tissue Cover Crochet Pattern Instructions for Rectangular Tissue Box

(If not making a succulent cover, omit the BLO in Round 3)

With Brown yarn if making a succulent cover box or main color (color A) if not making succulents, ch 44 with G hook and join without twisting

R1: Ch 1, 3 sc in same, sc in next 20, 3 sc in next 2, sc in next 20, 3 sc in last ch, join – 52 sts

R2: Ch 1, sc in same, 3 sc in next, sc in next 22, 3 sc in next, sc in next 2, 3 sc in next, sc in next 22, 3 sc in next, sc in last, join – 60 sts

R3: Work entire Round in BLO. Ch 1, sc in same and next, 3 sc in next, sc in next 24, 3 sc in next, sc in next 4, 3 sc in next, sc in next 24, 3 sc in next, sc in last 2, join – 68 sts

R4: Ch 1, sc in same and next 2, 3 sc in next, sc in next 26, 3 sc in next, sc in next 6, 3 sc in next, sc in next 26, 3 sc in next, sc in last 3, join – 76 sts

R15: Ch 3 (last ch counts as ch 1), skip sc, sc in ch 1 space, *ch 1, skip sc, sc in ch 1 space, repeat * around, join to 2nd ch changing to color A – 58 sts

R16: Ch 1, sc in same, sc in next sc, *sc in next ch 1 space, sc in next sc, repeat * around, join – 116 sts

R17: Repeat Round 14 changing to color C

R18: Repeat Round 15 changing to color A

R19: Repeat Round 16

Tissue Cover Crochet Pattern Instructions for Cube Tissue Box

(If not making a succulent cover, omit the FLO in Row 6 and the BLO in Row 11)

Ch 16

R1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc across – 15 sts

R2-5: Ch 1, turn, sc in same and each st across – 15 sts

R6: Ch 1, turn, sc in same and next, sc in FLO of next 11, sc in last 2 – 15 sts

R7: Ch 1, turn, sc in same and each st across – 15 sts

R8: Ch 1, turn, sc in same and next, ch 11, skip 11, sc in last 2 – 4 sts

R9: Ch 1, turn, sc in same and next, sc in next 11 chs, sc in last 2 – 15 sts

R10: Ch 1, turn, sc in same and each st across – 15 sts

R11: Ch 1, turn, sc in same and next, sc in BLO of next 11, sc in last 2 – 15 sts

R12-15: Ch 1, turn, sc in same and each st across – 15 sts

Do not finish off. The next Edging round will work along the entire edge of piece just made. Each corner will need 3 sc on each side.

Edging

R1: (see picture below) Ch 1, rotate piece so working down raw edge on left, 3 sc in same st from row 15 (corner), work 13 sc evenly down raw edge, 3 sc beginning ch (corner), sc in next 13 beginning chs, 3 sc in last beginning ch (corner), rotate working down opposite raw edge, work 13 sc evenly down raw edge, rotate piece so working along Row 15, 3 sc in first st of row 15, sc in next 13 sts, join – 64 sts

R2: Ch 1, hdc in same, *3 hdc in next, hdc in next 15, repeat * twice more, 3 hdc in next, hdc in next 14, join – 72 sts

R3: Work entire round in BLO. Ch 1, hdc in same and each st around, join – 72 sts

R4: Ch 1, hdc in same and each st around, join – 72 sts

R5: Ch 1, sc in same, ch 1, skip 1, *sc in next, ch 1, skip 1, repeat * around, join changing color – 36 sts

Succulent Leaves

(see picture tutorial on pg 9)

Small Leaves

(make 8 for rectangle box for separate succulents or 10 for one large succulent, 8 for cube box)

Ch 4 with G Hook

R1: Starting in 2nd st from hook, hdc 3 – 3 sts

R2: Ch 1, turn, 2 hdc in same, hdc in next, 2 hdc in last – 5 sts

R3-4: Ch 1, turn, hdc in same and each st across – 5 sts

R5: Ch 1, turn, starting in same, hdc2tog, hdc in next, hdc2tog – 3 sts

R6: Ch 1, turn, starting in same, hdc3tog – 1 st

Ch 1, finish off, and weave in ends.

Large

(make 10 for rectangle box for separate succulents or 12 for one large succulent, 8 for cube box)

Ch 6 with H hook

R1: Starting in 2nd st from hook, hdc 5 – 5 sts

R2: Ch 1, turn, 2 hdc in same, hdc in next 3, 2 hdc in last – 7 sts

R3-4: Ch 1, turn, hdc in same and each st across – 7 sts

R5: Ch 1, turn, starting in same, hdc2tog, hdc in next 3, hdc2tog – 5 sts

R6: Ch 1, turn, starting in same, hdc2tog, hdc in next, hdc2tog – 3 sts

R7: Ch 1, turn, starting in same, hdc3tog – 1 st

Ch 1, finish off, and weave in ends.

Sew leaves together and sew on cover. See pictures below.

Sewing Leaves on Cover

When sewing leaves on cover, have cover on tissue box for easier sewing. You do not need to use all front or back loops to sew on leaves. Find a video tutorial here.

Sew on Crocheted Tissue Cover

First, layer the smaller leaves on between and on top of the larger

Next, sew through both leaves

Then, add the next leaf, either large or small, and sew.

Sew on Crocheted Tissue Cover

Leaves may differ depending on amount needed

Pull ends to tighten leaves

Lastly, using front or back loops, sew leaves on cover.
