Crystalized Designs has finally decided to jump on the messy bun beanie bandwagon! And it wasn’t until recently when I had my hair in an up-do and brisk air was hitting my ears that made me really want a messy bun beanie. So began the creation of this crochet pattern. But I also love my beanies, and slouches… so this three in one free beanie slouch hat crochet pattern came to be!
With so many options, you can create a hat for every type of hat lover! Long hair always up? This messy bun beanie has great texture! Love the normal beanies? This brim folds up or can be left down. Love your slouchy look? Options to make either a folded brim or standard is instructed within the free beanie slouch hat crochet pattern.

- Yarn: Worsted Weight yarn like Lion Brand Boogie Nights Yarn, up to 265 yards
(Original yarn, Red Heart Boutique Midnight, is discontinued) - Hook: Size I, 5.5mm
- Scissors
- Yarn Needle
- Measuring Tape

14 hdc BLO by 9 rows = 4″
Pattern Key:

When stitch counts are listed, they will be listed in sequential order. Chains are not included in counts.
Beanie Slouch Hat Crochet Pattern
Brim
Ch 9
R1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in each ch across (8 sts)
R2:
0-3 months: Turn, ch 1, hdc in BLO of each st across (8 sts)
Repeat until you have 28 rows.
3-6 months: Turn, ch 1, hdc in BLO of each st across (8 sts)
Repeat until you have 34 rows.
6-12 months: Turn, ch 1, hdc in BLO of each st across (8 sts)
Repeat until you have 38 rows.
1-3 years: Turn, ch 1, hdc in BLO of each st across (8 sts)
Repeat until you have 42 rows.
3-10 years: Turn, ch 1, hdc in BLO of each st across (8 sts)
Repeat until you have 48 rows including row 1.
Teen/Adult: Turn, ch 1, hdc in BLO of each st across (8 sts)
Repeat until you have 50 rows including row 1.
Match both ends together. Ch 1, slst in each st and beginning chain like picture below. This joins the two ends. Turn the band just made so that the slsts are on the inside of the piece. This is now considered the wrong side.
Body of Hat
R1: Ch 1, work 3 sc in every 2 rows around, join – 42, 51, 57, 63, 72, 75 sts
R2:
0-3m, 3-10y: Ch 1, sc in same and each st around using FLO, join – 42, 72 sts
3-6m, 6-12m, 1-3y, t/a: Ch 1, sc2tog starting in same st using FLO, sc in remaining sts around using FLO, join – 50, 56, 62, 74 sts
R3: Ch 2, dc in same, slst in next, *dc in next, slst in next, repeat * around, join – 42, 50, 56, 62, 72, 74 sts
R4: Ch 1, turn, skip joining st, *dc in next slst, slst in next dc, repeat * around working last slst in joining st, join – 42, 50, 56, 62, 72, 74 sts
Messy Bun Beanie:
Repeat Round 4 until total length measures {5.5”, 6”, 6.5”, 7”, 7.5”, 8”} for hair opening.
Beanie:
Repeat Round 4 until total length measures {6.5”, 7”, 7.5”, 8”, 8.5”, 9”} for beanie.
Slouch Hat:
With brim not folded over, repeat Round 4 until total length measures {6.5”, 7”, 7.5”, 8”, 8.5”, 9”}. Add an additional 1” for folded over brim slouch hat.
In some of the next few rounds, working into the joining stitch may be required at the end of the rounds to complete a repeat. From this point forward, stitches will only be worked in the slip stitches.
R5: Ch 1, turn, skip joining st, *dc in next slst, skip dc, slst in next slst, skip dc, repeat * around, join – 21, 25, 28, 31, 36, 37 sts
R6: Ch 1, turn, skip joining st, *dc in next slst, skip dc, slst in next slst, skip dc, repeat * around, join – 11, 13, 14, 16, 18, 19 sts
Stop here for Messy Bun Beanie or continue for a Slouch/Beanie.
R7: Ch 1, turn, skip joining st, *dc in next slst, skip dc, slst in next slst, skip dc, repeat * around, join – 6, 7, 7, 8, 9, 10 sts
Finish off leaving a long tail. Weave tail between stitches and pull tight to close. Secure and weave in ends.
Attach pom pom if desired.
