One of my favorite things about the winter season is decorating for the holidays, which include snowman precisely placed around my kitchen and dining area. That’s why I created Crispen the Snowman, a free crochet pattern! I love how soft he is using Lion Brand Go For Faux and Lion Brand Vel-Luxe yarns. If you love snowmen, or know someone who loves them, you’ll be making an abundance of these guys!

Snowman Body and Head

Ch 3
R1: Starting in 2nd chain, 4 hdc in each st, join – 8 sts
R2-10: Ch 1, hdc in same and each st around, join – 8 sts
Finish off leaving long tail. Create second arm. Stuffing arms isn’t necessary but can be done. Recommended: See if one side of Snowman sits better. Stuffing body evenly will help keep a uniform shape. Using tails, sew one arm on each side at Round 16 (neck) of Snowman.
Carrot Nose
With H hook and orange worsted yarn:
Magic Circle
R1: Ch 1, 4 hdc in circle, join – 4 sts
R2: Ch 1, hdc in same, 2 hdc in next, hdc in next, 2 hdc in next, join – 6 sts
R3-4: Ch 1, hdc in same and each st around, join – 6 sts
Finish off leaving a long tail. Sew on head of Snowman. Add safety eyes and small amount of black yarn for a smile. Add 3 1¼” buttons down the front of the body (align with nose).
Scarf
With H hook and Lion Brand Vel-Luxe:
Ch 11
R1: Starting in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in each st across – 10 sts
R2-138: Ch 1, turn, hdc in same and each st across – 10 sts
Finish off and weave in ends. Add fringe. Find a tutorial on how to add fringe here.

R15: Ch 1, hdc in same and next 4, 2 hdc in next, *hdc in next 5, 2 hdc in next, repeat * around, join – 77 sts
R16: Ch 1, hdc in same and next 5, 2 hdc in next, *hdc in next 6, 2 hdc in next, repeat * around, join – 88 sts
Finish off and weave in ends. Stuff top portion of hat with fiberfill, do not overfill. Place on Snowman’s head to check if more or less fiberfill is needed. Once desired amount is added, sew hat on top of Snowman’s head.

Hi Crystal, thank you for this really gorgeous little snowman, he has such a sweet face. I think one of the hardest things to do is create that very special face on a crochet or knitted toy, but you have done just that. The rest of Crispin is great too. Thank you for sharing this pattern, its much appreciated. Keep creating special things!
Thank you so much for your kind words! I find faces difficult as well and it took several tries to settle on this one. Glad you enjoy him!
I love making snowmen for holiday/winter decorations. This one is a cutie.
Thank you so much!
Mine turned out beautifully. I love him.
Aww, so glad!
Im very confused about the body. I don’t see pattern for it?
Could you take a screenshot of what you’re seeing and email it to [email protected] please? I see the directions and had someone check as well and they see it.
I don't usually do things like this, I crochet blankets, hat's, scarf's, shawls and other things. I seen this and oh yeah I have to make it because I love snowmen.
Thank you so much for sharing, are you on youtube??? I watch alot of my yarny channels on there.
Hello! I’m so glad you love him as much as I do! I am on YouTube but haven’t yet made a video tutorial for Crispen. I’ll put that on my request list. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.
Kind regards,
Crystal
Reading through the pattern before I begin, it appears that the body and head are crocheted as one continuous. I am unsure though on what row the head begins, I did not see where that was noted in the pattern. Could you please reply with the start of the head row, to make sure I am on track. Thank you for the pattern.
Hello! The head starts at row 17.
Hello,
Do you have a tutorial video for crispin the snowman. I am working on the pattern now and am stuck on the directions for row 3. What does it mean to chain 1 and then half double crochet into same?
Hello. Unfortunately, I do not have a video. The chain 1 brings your stitch up to the appropriate height, and then you'll want to work the first HDC in the very first stitch. The chain 1 does not count as stitch.
Hello, thank you for such a cute snowman. I’m in the process of making him and I’m wondering how you made the mouth? Did you use embroidery floss?
Thank you
Ware is the body for the crispan snowman?
Hello. This pattern starts with the body, then moves to the head in the Snowman Body and Head section.
