Gatlin Cowl ~ A Free Crochet Pattern

The Gatlin Cowl, your companion when it’s cold enough to require an added layer or if you want a statement piece with your outfit. This free crochet cowl pattern uses puff crochet stitches to enhance the hand dyed yarn in this project.

Free Crochet Cowl Pattern

Yarn:

2 hanks hand-dyed Weird Sisters Wool Emporium DK weight yarn (shown in Rory Lammas Lughnasadh)
5% Superwash Merino, 25% Nylon245 yards, 100 grams


Hook:

Furls Streamline Metal H 5.00mm Crochet Hook

Notions:

»  Scissors
»  Yarn Needle
»  Measuring Tape


Sizing:

One Size, 18” width by 9.5” length


Gauge:

18 sc, 21 rows = 4”
In pattern: 10.5 puff stitches = 4”

A Furls Streamline Metal Crochet Hook was used to create this free cowl crochet pattern. When using these hooks, my gauge differed from when using a different brand. Please always check gauge to ensure the best project!


Pattern Key:

» Ch(s): Chain(s)
» Sc: Single Crochet
» Dc: Double Crochet
» Slst: Slip stitch
» St(s): Stitches
» YO: Yarn Over
» Puff Stitch (puff st): When pulling up a loop, draw up to the height of a dc.
*YO, insert hook into indicated chain/space, YO and pull up a loop, repeat from * 2 more times (11 loops on hook), YO and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to close

Ch 200, join without twisting

R1: Ch 1, sc in same, ch 1, skip 1, *sc in next, ch 1, skip 1, repeat * around, join to first sc - 100 sts here and throughout

R2: Ch 2 (counts as sc and ch 1), skip 1st ch, sc in next ch 1 space, *ch 1, skip 1, sc in next ch 1 space, repeat * around, join to first ch 

R3: Slst in next ch 1 space, ch 2, puff st in same space, ch 1, skip 1 sc, *puff st in next ch 1 space, ch 1, skip 1, repeat * around, join to first puff st 

R4: Ch 2 (counts as sc and ch 1), skip 1st ch, sc in next ch 1 space, *ch 1, skip 1, sc in next ch 1 space, repeat * around, join to first ch 

R5: Slst in next ch 1 space, ch 1, sc in same, ch 1, skip 1, *sc in next, ch 1, skip 1, repeat * around, join to first sc 

Repeat Round 3 - 5 for a total of 35 rounds total. Finish off and weave in ends. It's recommended to block you cowl. Find a wet blocking tutorial here.
