I have been a gnome collector for years! Actually, a Tomte is what hooked me (pun intended!). A Tomte is a Scandinavian mythical gnome, and I fell in love with the first one I saw. If you love tomtes or gnomes as much as I do, you're going to fall in love with this Gnome Hanging Crochet Pattern!
This wall hanging can be created using a wide variety of yarns and embellishments. All yarns used in these hangings are from We Crochet and were so amazing to work with. Watch for upcoming reviews!
Video tutorial on how to work over yarn as well as weaving and fringe can be found at the end of the pattern. Video shows small wall hanging directions.

No Roving?
If you’re not a fan of roving, faux fur can be found in most craft stores in the fabric section. Fur fabric can be used for the beard, brim, and nose. When cutting fur fabric, keep scissors as close to the fabric as possible, trying not to cut the fur itself. Cut and roll the nose to cover the chain spaces recommended in the pattern. Same with the hat brim. The beard will need to be cut in a triangle shape to cover the rows worked.

Special Pattern Notes:
This pattern is worked in the round continuously. Use a stitch marker to keep track of the first or last stitch. Working in the round reduces ends to weave in and allows for a nice backing. Plastic canvas can be inserted before closing so the wall hanging keeps its shape better when hung.
Techniques Used
This pattern uses crochet, weaving, and fringe techniques. Find how to add fringe here. To see a video tutorial of how to weave, find a full tutorial here using the small hanging as an example.
Pattern Sizes
This pattern has instructions for two sizes. Meet gauge using same or similar yarn to create an 8” width or 12” width wall hanging. If gauge is off or different yarn is used, sizes may vary.
Other Notes
The wall hanging is worked from the top down. Stitch counts include chains.
When working Color B (hat color), work over Color A. Switch back to Color A by dropping Color B. When next round works with Color B, pull the color along the stitches from left to right and crochet over that strand as well as Color B.
Embellishments may include, but are not limited to:
Bells, floral/greenery, mistletoe, pinecones, tassels, shells, stones, air succulents, wooden cutouts, etc

Finishing Large Wall Hanging
Weaving will only be worked in the Color B section with chain 1 spaces.
Nose
With Color D, cut 2 strands approximately 45” each. Fold in half and tape ends for easier weaving. From left to right, weave the 4 strands held from back to front through middle 4 chain spaces of Color B from Round 21. Keep loops raised so one to two fingers can fit through. Weave from back to front to the left for 3 loop section.
Hat Brim
Color C is going to work a braided weave above the nose using chain spaces from Round 20 and 21 for the lower section of the hat brim. Tape both ends for easy weaving.
Weave one end of roving through left side from back to front and pull to the left side. This will be woven in later. Cross working roving in front of end and weave from front to back, right to left, continuously in an arch above nose to the end of the chain spaces to create 4-5 loops. Only a few of the chain spaces will be used.
For the top half of the brim, roving will be worked from right to left. Continuously work in an arch above lower brim from front to back, left to right.
Beard
Using Color E roving, separate approximately 10” sections. Each section can be divided 3-5 times for thinner strands. Starting as close to the nose and hat brim, add strands of roving fringe around posts and single crochets. Continue working down Rows 2-10. Not all chains or posts need to have roving fringe. Work sporadically and fill more if gaps are obvious when complete.
Twist, twirl, fluffy beard as desired. Spray beard with hair spray to hold in place.
Background Fringe
Cut 30” strips of Color F. Only add fringe to Color A on Round 21 between double crochets and to the skipped stitches from Round 20.
Finishing
Cut plastic canvas just under the measurements of your top portion of wall hanging (Rounds 1-21). Insert canvas and sew up bottom using Color A and working under hat brim and nose so sewn area is not visible from front.
Weave in ends. Single crochet wooden dowel on top of wall hanging (or attach a strand to each corner for hanging).
Add any embellishments.
